Sustainability

Any business that is based on the use of natural resources has a responsibility to minimize the impact of their activities on the environment. At Hazelhill Timber Products, we take that responsibility very seriously and we implement the following environmental practices:

  • All of the timber used in our pallets comes from sustainable forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
  • Returned pallets that are no longer usable are turned into other products such as animal bedding, garden mulch and pellets for wood stoves.
  • We use native Irish timber wherever possible to minimize the carbon impact of procuring raw materials.
  • We operate an on-site recycling program to capture and reuse discarded products such as cardboard cartons, nails, and skids.
  • We implement a repair and reuse program to stimulate pallet reuse.

We are happy to confirm that none of our products contain the chemicals 2,4,6 Tribromophenol (TBP) or 2,4,6 Tribromoanisole (TBA), nor are they used by any of our suppliers or in any of our manufacturing processes.

The use of timber pallets is an environmentally responsible choice. Timber is a renewable resource. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the air, actually reducing air pollution. The European forest industry respects its natural resources and manages them carefully. The Timber Packaging and Pallet Confederation (TimCon) estimates that the amount of trees planted in Europe each year exceeds the amount harvested by an area the size of Cyprus.

We use Carbon Calculator software developed for TimCon by the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Management to calculate and monitor the carbon footprint of the pallets we produce. Based on criteria such as the quantity of wood used in the pallet and the distance travelled by the timber in raw and final form, we can understand, and therefore work to minimize, the carbon footprint.
